Back in 2016, I had some random Marvel Legends figures laying around – specifically the Ronin vs Elektra 2-pack. I decided that I needed to do something with them, rather than just have the regular figures taking up space in my toy box. Well, my friend Meghan of Dirty Teacup Designs is a big Mortal Kombat fan, and Christmas was coming up… so that solved half the issue!
Meghan’s favorite kharacter is Mileena, the purple ninja woman who wields twin sai — okay, so, easy enough. And Ronin with a bit of work could be a fun interpretation of one of the many palette-swap ninja men that Mortal Kombat is known for. So I went with Scorpion, because, why not.
Mileena’s sai came with Elektra, so those were easy enough. Scorpion’s spear is a kunai from a 2012 TMNT figure (Leonardo, I think?), with a twist tie from something or another. Ronin’s twin katana were already donated to my Mirage-style TMNT figures.
Lots of paint, a bit of Sculpey III for their masks, and some electrical tape for Mileena’s belt, and they were good to go. I opted for the gold paint on Scorp, because it just popped a little bit more than plain yellow would have.
I knew I’d be seeing Meghan later that week, so I posted the above photos on Instagram, but gave no indication that they were a gift for anybody. When I saw her a few days later, she kinda freaked out. “You made these FOR ME!?”
Totally worth the effort to make my friend’s Khristmas a little bit merrier.
